Quick Answer
UAE free zone businesses ARE in scope for mandatory e-invoicing from 2027. DMCC, JAFZA, IFZA, DIFC, ADGM, RAKEZ — all UAE VAT-registered free zone companies must issue PINT AE XML invoices from their mandatory deadline. Free zone licence status does not exempt any business from the UAE e-invoicing mandate. Perfonec is an Odoo Ready Partner with Odoo Middle East (Cert n°0000699697) and handles free zone-specific Odoo e-invoicing configuration.

⚠️ Critical — Free Zones Are NOT Exempt
UAE free zone businesses ARE in scope for UAE mandatory e-invoicing from 2027. Free zone licence status — DMCC, JAFZA, IFZA, DIFC, ADGM, or any other UAE free zone — does NOT exempt a business from the UAE e-invoicing mandate. The mandate applies to all UAE VAT-registered businesses that issue B2B invoices, regardless of whether they operate on the mainland or in a free zone. Odoo ERP used by free zone businesses requires the same UAE E-Invoice Add-On and PINT AE XML configuration as mainland Odoo users.
Summary: This guide is specifically for UAE free zone businesses using Odoo ERP — covering whether DMCC, JAFZA, IFZA, DIFC, ADGM, and other free zones are in scope, the free zone-specific PINT AE requirements that standard guides do not cover, how to configure Odoo for free zone invoice scenarios, and the mandatory deadlines that apply equally to free zone and mainland businesses. Perfonec Computers is an Odoo Ready Partner with Odoo Middle East and handles free zone-specific Odoo e-invoicing configuration for UAE businesses.
The most dangerous misconception in UAE free zone business communities right now is that free zone licence status exempts a company from UAE mandatory e-invoicing. It does not. The UAE e-invoicing framework is built on UAE VAT registration — not on licence jurisdiction. If your DMCC, JAFZA, IFZA, or DIFC company is UAE VAT-registered and issues B2B invoices to other UAE VAT-registered businesses, you are in scope for mandatory e-invoicing from 2027, and your Odoo ERP needs to be configured to comply.
What makes free zone Odoo configuration different from mainland configuration is not the basic PINT AE field requirements — those are the same. It is the free zone-specific invoice scenarios that mainland businesses rarely encounter — designated zone transactions, beneficiary fields, export invoice VAT categories, intra-free-zone transactions, and multi-currency invoices in USD or EUR — all of which require specific Odoo configuration that standard setup guides do not cover in depth.

The UAE e-invoicing mandate is administered by the UAE Federal Tax Authority — not by individual free zone authorities. A business is in scope based on its UAE VAT registration number and its B2B transaction activity, not on whether it holds a DMCC, JAFZA, IFZA, DIFC, or mainland licence. The free zone authority — whether DMCC, DP World (JAFZA), or DIFC — has no authority to exempt UAE VAT-registered businesses from FTA-mandated e-invoicing requirements.

Designated Zone Transactions
Transactions between UAE designated zones — such as Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA), which is a designated zone for VAT purposes — may have specific VAT treatment that differs from standard taxable supplies. Goods supplied within or between designated zones may be out of scope or zero-rated depending on the nature of the goods and the transaction. In Odoo, the correct PINT AE VAT category code must be mapped to your designated zone fiscal position — O for out of scope transactions, Z for zero-rated. Incorrect category codes cause PINT AE validation failures for every designated zone invoice transmitted through the ASP. Contact Perfonec to confirm the correct PINT AE category for your specific designated zone transactions.
Beneficiary Field for Free Zone to Mainland Transactions
Under UAE E-Invoicing Guidelines Version 1.1 (June 2026), invoices from free zone businesses to UAE mainland VAT-registered buyers may require a beneficiary field in the PINT AE XML that identifies the free zone entity as the beneficial supplier. This field ensures the FTA can correctly identify the supply as originating from a free zone business. In Odoo, the E-Invoice Add-On must be configured to populate this beneficiary field correctly in the PINT AE XML output for free zone to mainland B2B transactions. Perfonec advises on whether your specific free zone transaction scenarios require this field based on your licence type and transaction patterns.
Export Invoices from Free Zone to Overseas Buyers
Free zone businesses frequently issue zero-rated export invoices to overseas buyers — one of the primary reasons for operating from a UAE free zone. In Odoo, these export invoices must use PINT AE VAT category code Z (zero-rated) with the buyer’s country code set to the correct non-UAE country code in the customer contact record. Odoo fiscal positions must correctly map export invoices to PINT AE type Z. A common error is mapping export invoices to the standard S (standard rated) fiscal position — this generates PINT AE validation failures because the VAT category code does not match the zero VAT amount on the invoice.
Intra-Free-Zone Transactions
Transactions between two VAT-registered free zone businesses within the same free zone, or between businesses in different UAE free zones, may have specific VAT treatment that depends on whether the goods or services are consumed within the free zone or introduced into mainland UAE. Confirm the correct VAT category for each intra-free-zone transaction type with your UAE tax advisor, and ensure the correct PINT AE code — S (standard), Z (zero-rated), E (exempt), or O (out of scope) — is mapped in Odoo for each specific scenario. Perfonec configures separate fiscal positions in Odoo for each intra-free-zone transaction type your business uses.
Multi-Currency Invoices in USD, EUR, GBP
Free zone businesses issue a significantly higher proportion of foreign currency invoices than mainland businesses — USD, EUR, and GBP invoices are common for DMCC and JAFZA companies trading internationally. PINT AE XML requires both the transaction currency amount and the AED equivalent amount on all non-AED invoices. Standard Odoo multi-currency invoices only output the transaction currency amount. The Odoo E-Invoice Add-On must be configured to include AED equivalents in the PINT AE XML output, and the AED exchange rate source — UAE Central Bank or your agreed contract rate — must be configured in Odoo for each foreign currency your business invoices in.
In Odoo General Settings > Company, configure your company address using structured fields — separate street, city, and country code fields. Free zone businesses must use UAE (AE) as the country code in PINT AE XML regardless of their free zone location. Many free zone Odoo users incorrectly store the address as a single free-text line — for example “Unit 401, One JLT, DMCC, Dubai, UAE” — in a single address field. This fails PINT AE address structure validation at the ASP. The street field, city field, and country code field must be populated separately in Odoo General Settings.
In Odoo, fiscal positions determine which PINT AE VAT category code appears on invoice lines for each customer. Free zone businesses typically have more distinct transaction types than mainland businesses — and each requires its own fiscal position mapped to the correct PINT AE code. At minimum, create separate fiscal positions for: UAE mainland VAT-registered buyers (S — standard rated), UAE designated zone buyers (O or Z — depending on goods/services), overseas export buyers (Z — zero-rated), and intra-free-zone buyers (confirm with tax advisor). Assign each customer contact the correct fiscal position in Odoo.
Create a dedicated fiscal position for zero-rated export invoices to overseas buyers mapped to PINT AE VAT category Z. In Odoo customer contact records, ensure that all overseas buyer contacts have their country correctly set to the buyer’s country — not AE. When Odoo generates a PINT AE XML invoice for an export, the buyer’s country code in the PINT AE XML must be the actual buyer country, not UAE. The fiscal position for export invoices must also map your VAT ledgers to the zero-rated PINT AE tax code with a 0% VAT rate and category code Z.
In the Odoo E-Invoice Add-On settings, configure the beneficiary field for free zone to mainland transactions if your specific transaction type requires it under Version 1.1. Perfonec reviews your free zone licence type, the nature of your B2B transactions, and your specific invoice flow to advise whether the beneficiary field is required for your business and, if so, how it should be populated in the Odoo PINT AE XML output. This is a free zone-specific configuration that does not apply to mainland Odoo users. Contact Perfonec to confirm your free zone beneficiary field requirements.
If your free zone business issues invoices in USD, EUR, GBP, or other foreign currencies, configure Odoo’s multi-currency settings to include AED equivalent amounts in the PINT AE XML output from the E-Invoice Add-On. In Odoo, go to Accounting > Configuration > Currencies and activate the foreign currencies you invoice in. Configure the exchange rate source — either automatic from the UAE Central Bank API or manual entry for agreed contract rates. The Odoo E-Invoice Add-On must be configured to output both the transaction currency amount and the AED equivalent on every non-AED invoice in the PINT AE XML.

No. DMCC companies that are UAE VAT-registered and issue B2B invoices to other UAE VAT-registered businesses are fully in scope for mandatory e-invoicing from 2027. DMCC licence status does not exempt any business from the UAE e-invoicing mandate — the mandate is based on UAE VAT registration, not licence jurisdiction. Contact Perfonec for a free DMCC Odoo e-invoicing assessment.
No. JAFZA (Jebel Ali Free Zone) companies that are UAE VAT-registered are in scope for mandatory e-invoicing. Note that JAFZA is also a UAE designated zone for VAT purposes — meaning transactions within JAFZA or between JAFZA and other designated zones may have specific VAT treatment (out of scope or zero-rated) that must be correctly configured as PINT AE VAT category codes in Odoo. Contact Perfonec for JAFZA-specific Odoo e-invoicing configuration.
Yes. DIFC and ADGM companies that are UAE VAT-registered are in scope for mandatory UAE e-invoicing from 2027. DIFC and ADGM operate under their own civil and commercial law frameworks, but UAE VAT — and by extension UAE e-invoicing — applies to all UAE VAT-registered businesses regardless of which authority issued their licence.
Free zone Odoo configuration has the same 17 mandatory PINT AE fields as mainland businesses — plus five additional free zone-specific requirements: designated zone transaction VAT category mapping, beneficiary field for free zone to mainland invoices, export invoice zero-rated mapping, intra-free-zone transaction configuration, and multi-currency AED equivalent configuration. These five requirements are specific to free zone invoice scenarios and are not covered by standard mainland Odoo e-invoicing guides.
PINT AE XML requires both the transaction currency amount (e.g. USD) and the AED equivalent amount on all non-AED invoices. Standard Odoo multi-currency invoices only output the transaction currency. The Odoo E-Invoice Add-On must be configured to include AED equivalents in the PINT AE XML output, with the exchange rate source set to either the UAE Central Bank rate or your agreed contract rate. Perfonec configures this as part of every free zone Odoo e-invoicing engagement. Contact Perfonec for multi-currency free zone Odoo configuration.
